Five Modes, Five Decision Axes

The cost column is a relative index for planning, not a quotation. The red column matters most: it is where a mode stops being the right answer, and it is the column most providers leave out.

2 CBM — a test order or a first restock

Typical answer: LCL or express

What actually changes

You pay by volume plus chargeable weight, so carton dimensions and packaging matter more than unit cost. Consolidation adds handling days at both ends of the voyage.

Buyer decision

Do not split a 2 CBM shipment into two smaller parcels to chase a lower rate. Documentation, clearance and final delivery are largely fixed costs and they do not halve with the volume.

12 CBM — the crossover band

Typical answer: LCL or shared container
Book and confirm cutoff→ Consolidate / load→ Sail (USEC 28–35 days)→ Customs clearance→ Delivery to door

What actually changes

Per-CBM charges and destination handling add up faster here than at 2 CBM, and the gap to a full container narrows with every extra pallet.

Buyer decision

Pause before booking LCL. Price the same 12 CBM as a full container and compare total landed cost, not the headline rate. If the two are close, take the container and the shorter handover chain.

Typical answer: FCL sea freight
Book container→ Load and seal at factory→ Sail (USEC 28–35 days)→ Customs clearance→ Final delivery

What actually changes

Per-CBM exposure disappears, cost per unit falls, and the shipment becomes one consignment with one clearance rather than a consolidated groupage file.

Buyer decision

Lock space earlier, because this is the volume most exposed to peak-season rolling. Ask your provider in writing how peak-season surcharges are handled before you commit the sailing.

One number

FCL vs LCL: Where the Break-Even Sits

LCL is priced per volume or per weight, whichever is greater. FCL is priced per container. The crossover is the volume where those two lines meet for your lane.

Rule of thumb — 20-foot container Most planners start pricing FCL quotes once LCL volume passes roughly 13–15 CBM, because fixed origin and destination charges make up a large share of the LCL invoice.
Rule of thumb — 40-foot and 40HQ The FCL crossover usually sits higher because the container itself is more expensive: expect to start comparing around 18–22 CBM of cargo.
Weight can move the line LCL is charged on the greater of volume or metric ton. Dense cargo such as hardware, tile or liquids can hit the weight dimension first, so the break-even arrives at a lower CBM figure.
These are planning rules of thumb, not a quotation. Always compare live all-in rates for your lane, volume, cargo type and season before deciding.

Run the check in three steps

  • Record the total CBM and total gross weight of the shipment, not the packed carton count.
  • Ask for one LCL all-in rate and one FCL all-in rate for the identical lane, cargo-ready date and delivery address.
  • Add destination-side costs — clearance, handling and final delivery — because these behave very differently between groupage and a sealed container.

Why the line moves against you

At 12 CBM you are already carrying a full set of fixed documentation and clearance costs across a small volume. Splitting that volume across two LCL sailings doubles the fixed side rather than halving it — the single most common reason a "cheaper" LCL plan ends up costing more.

Service level

Port-to-Port or DDP Door-to-Door?

The mode answers how your cargo moves. The service level answers who handles customs, duties and the last mile — and that is where most surprise invoices appear.

What a DDP door-to-door service covers
